Where did tORQUEMADA come out from? Was it just one of the chances life holds out to you or was it the uncounscious belief that there is always someone, somewhere, floating on your same wavelength?! In 2003 fall, Alfonso Surace and Luciano Finazzi created a guitar&drum duo from the ashes of Manotazo ( desert band where Alfonso had raped the guitar and Ciano destroyed the microphone, with Matteo Ron‘Zani on the bass and Simo on the drum). NoiseMachineBand (the original name of the duo) was born during winter afternoons spent crying every rages out of both men. No pretensions, only watt and sweat, no emptiness was left uncovered, holes played their sounds too, rough, garage, fucking energy. From Alfonso’s cables and Ciano’s cymbals, one by one, leaked out songs of various influences, but all with one and only matrix: x=time y=rough! Surely, many were the bands most contaminating, but the current idea was to take up Steve Albini’s filthy math-rock (Shellac, Big Black, Rapeman), while pigging on Joy Division’s back, shaking our hands with Josh Homme and friends, and giving a sound kick in the head to god-knows-who. We resolved to record our first demo (utterly self-produced by Alfo’s faked Pantegana Records). No more than three songs (Plug, Scheggia, Chi?!) + 2 bonus tracks (Industrialnoisepostrock e Noise11). The first live-sets come in, but the duo is mainly concerned with professionally recording the songs ( so far alcoholically arranged with unimpressive results, given the low-cost and toy-made self-production). The two walk up to Davide Perucchini (Verdena’s sound engineer), who initially agrees with them to record the drums, but two days later decides to co-produce NMB’s Cd. There’s a feeling in the air that ties Davide up to the other two, beyond the merely music flair. Scheggia turns into Times, Chi?! becomes Who?!, the rest is all on the Cd (except for Noise11 that will be rebaptised as Disaster). After completing the recording, Davide joins the band as its new and first bass-player!! At that stage the former NoiseMachineBand evolves into Torquemada and the earner record in “Tales from the Bottle”. In a year time the duo has turned into a trio and the gigs restart: opening for CUT, a bunch of performances here and there and the regional final selection for AW2005…

Come nacquero i tORQUEMADA? Fu solamente uno dei tanti casi che la vita ti pone davanti o l'ovvia consapevolezza che c'è sempre chi la pensa come te, anche se non in toto ma crede come in te in qualcosa che c'è o non c'è? Alfonso Surace, verso la fine del 2003, crea con Luciano Finazzi un duo guitar&drum dalle ceneri dei Manotazo(gruppo desert dove i due si dimenavano rispettivamentealla all chitarra e alla voce + Matteo 'Zani al basso e il Simo alla batteria). La NoiseMachineBand(nome originario del duo)nasce quindi durante pomeriggi invernali passati a sfogare tutto quello che passava nelle menti dei due. Nessuna pretesa, solo watt e sudore, nessun vuoto rimane scoperto, anche i buchi hanno il loro suono, grezzo ,garage, fottutissimamente energico. Dai cavi di Alfonso e le pelli di Ciano colarono pezzi su pezzi d'influenze svariate ma con una sola matrice: x=time y=rough! Sicuramente i gruppi che + hanno contaminato i due sono tanti ma l'idea del momento era quella di riprendere il math rock schifoso di Steave Albini(Shellac, Big Black, Rapeman)ma allo stesso tempo tenersi sulle spalle i Joy Division e nel frattempo dare la mano ai Kyuss mentre si dava una testata a non so chi. Si decise di registrare un primo demo(completamente autoprodotto). Tre canzoni in totale (Plug, Scheggia, Chi?!) + 2 bonus tracks( Industrialnoisepostrock e Noise11). Non mancano le prime date ma ciò che interessa più al duo rough è quello di registrare i pezzi finora arrangiati al metanolo ma impressi con risultati ovviamente mediocri data la autoproduzione costata niente e fatta con strumenti-giocattolo. I due si recano da Davide Perucchini (fonico dei Verdena) che li accoglie inizialmente solo per registrare le batterie, ma dopo due giorni di recording Davide decide di co-produrre il disco della NMB. Nell'aria si nota bene che tra il duo e Davide c'è un feeling particolare che non si riconduce solo alla passione per la musica, va oltre. Scheggia diventa Times, Chi?! diventa Who!?, il resto è tutto sul disco(tranne Noise11 che diventerà Disaster). Dopo aver terminato le registrazioni Davide entra a far parte della band come primo e nuovo bassista!!! E' in questo momento che la NoiseMachineBand si trasforma in tORQUEMADA e il primo disco in "Tales from the bottle". Il duo dopo un anno si fa trio e le date ricominciano. Ma è il 2006 la svolta per la band, finalmente un’etichetta indipendente si accorge di loro, l’Insecta Records, che ammira le potenzialità sonore durante la Terza Edizione dello Tsunami Festival. “Tales from the bottle” verrà presentato ufficialmente il 19 gennaio 2007…….tORQUE goes on…..


Gli OJM provengono dalla provincia di Treviso e nascono a maggio del 1997. Il gruppo è riuscito subito a farsi notare da giornalisti ed addetti ai lavori italiani, creando uno stile personale che abbina al rock grezzo sonorità psichedeliche, assorbendo in modo magistrale le lezioni di Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, MC5, GRAN FUNK.

Il loro primo disco "Extended Playing" uscito per Agitato Records/Venus nel febb. 2001 ha venduto più di 1000 copie; nel marzo 2002 la casa discografica Beard of Stars Records/Self ha pubblicato il primo album degli OJM, "Heavy", prodotto da PAUL CHAIN e, aiutato dal video di "The Sleeper" in rotazione nelle tv specializzate (Rock TV, ReteA, Mtv,ecc..), a distanza di pochi mesi, ha esaurito la prima tiratura del disco.

Ad ottobre 2002, Massimo (Batteria) e Matteo (Basso), hanno continuato a collaborare con PAUL CHAIN suonando in due canzoni su "Container" (album edito da BEYOND PROD.) e accompagnandolo in tour per l'Italia; ma è con "Heavy" che parte l'avventura al di fuori dei confini italiani, sia grazie a Beard of Stars, distribuita in tutto il mondo (cargo, centurymedia, abraxas, high been music, self), sia dall'attenzione che le riviste estere hanno rivolto ad "Heavy" con tante recensioni ed interviste su giornali e webzine di tutto il mondo (Kerrag!, stonerrock.com, stonedgods, metal hammer Greco, Francese ecc…). Nel frattempo lo stile e l'attitudine degli OJM ha virato verso lidi più rock 'n' roll, pubblicando a maggio 2003 lo split in 7" con gli inglesi Gorilla, sempre per Beard Of Star.

A ottobre 2003 si chiudono nel loro studio personale per dare vita a "The Light Album", uscito a settembre 2004 per Go Down Recors, distribuito in Italia da Audioglobe ed in Europa da Sonic Rendevouz/cargo, un album in leggero perchè lo stoner iniziale dei primi due album si è ammorbidito verso sonorità garage/psichedeliche, mantenendo comunque l'impatto ed il muro di suono che li ha sempre contraddistinti ma avvicinandosi a sonorità piu' sporche: la rabbia si è trasformata in aggressività! L'uscita del disco accompagnato dal video di "Talking About Revolutions" porta i nostri eroi sugli schermi delle maggiori music television italiane (MTV, ROCKTV, ALL MUSIC,YOSTV ecc) ed un importante riscontro di pubblico e di critica. Dal vivo hanno alle spalle miriadi di concerti e ben due tour in Inghilterra, live show intensi, selvaggi e travolgenti, degni dei migliori maestri d'oltreoceano, dividendo il palco con DKT / MC5, Motorpsycho, Brant Bjork, Gorilla, Marlene Kuntz, Hardcore Superstar, Nebula, Josiah, Fleshtones e molti altri. Dopo l'uscita di "The Light Album" in squadra entra Alex Germany alla chitarra (al posto di Frank Puglie) ed Andrew Pozzy al basso (al posto di Matt Bordin) potenziando il loro groove e la loro energia, diventando un cannone che spara palle di decibel proponendo un mix di stoner, psichedelica e rock n roll zeppelinianamente sonico alla stesso tempo!! A luglio 2005 sono entrati in studio per registrare alcuni brani con Brant Bjork che usciranno nei prossimi mesi su un 7" vinile ed a marzo 2006 entreranno in studio per il nuovo album con un produttore d'eccezione: Michael Davis degli storici MC5!! OJM was formed in Treviso, Italy, in 1997. From the very moment the band generated interested from the italian musical press and the rock'n roll scene in general, with their own personal genre which combined rough guitars with a psychedelic touch, taking influences from Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, MC5, GRAN FUNK.

Their first recording "Extended Playing", released for Agitato Records/Venus on february 2001, sold more than 1000 copies; on march 2002 the label Beard of Stars Records/Self published their first album "Heavy", produced by Paul Chain and, with the help of the video "The Sleeper" in rotation on the main alternative tv channels, the copies were sold out in few months.

The collaboration with Paul Chain continued on october 2002 when Massimo (drums) and Matteo (bass guitar) recorded with him two tracks of the album "Container" (released by Beyond Pro.) and followed him in the italian tour. But it's with the album "Heavy" that the band began to be acclaimed outside the italian borders, thanks both to Beard of Stars, which is ditributed worldwide (cargo, centurymedia, abraxas, high been music, self), but also because of all the interest that foreign press gave to "Heavy" with reviews and interviews (Kerrag!, stonerrock.com, stonedgods, metal hammer in Greece and France etc…). In the meantime, their musical attitude started exploring different soundscapes, more rockn'roll oriented, and eventually evolved into a 7" split with the british band Gorilla, always under Beard of Stars records.

On October 2003 the band is back in studio to work on "The Light Album", released on september 2004 for Go Down Records and distributed in Italy from Audioglobe and in Europe from Sonic Rendevouz/cargo; the album was entitled "light" because it marked a subtle change in orientation, as the stoner attitude of the very beginning gave space to more garage and psychedelic sounds, always keeping their impact and loudness, but in a rougher way: rage turned into aggressivity! The video "Talking about revolution", first single taken from the album, brought OJM on the main music televisions in Italy (MTV, ROCKTV, ALL MUSIC,YOSTV etc) giving them a significant public and critical acclaim.

As regards their live career, OJM can boast hundreds of gigs and two UK tours, intense and wild performances and the supporting of several legendary bands such as DKT / MC5, Motorpsycho, Brant Bjork, Gorilla, Marlene Kuntz, Hardcore Superstar, Nebula, Josiah, Fleshtones and many more. After the release of "The light album" the line up changed and the new entries Alex Germany (guitars, replacing Frank Puglie) and Andrew Pozzi (bass guitars, replacing Matt Bordin) enforced their impact and their groove resulting in a mixture of psychedelia, stoner and rock'n'roll, zeppelin-oriented and sonic at the same time! On July 2005, OJM were back in studio again to record some tracks with Brant Bjork, which will be released soon on 7" and finally on march 2006 they'll start working on the new album with a remarkable producer: Michael Davis from the legendary MC5!
